Troubling Day Ahead as Wildfires Continue to Ravage Newfoundland and Labrador
As wildfires rage across Newfoundland and Labrador, the situation is becoming more dire. On August 12, 2025, fire duty officer Mark Lawlor warned that crews would face a “troublesome day” ahead in battling the Paddy’s Pond fire, one of the five currently burning out of control in the province. The fire, which began on Monday, quickly spread to 200 hectares, forcing evacuation alerts for Paradise and Conception Bay South (C.B.S.).

Escalating Wildfires and Evacuations
The Paddy’s Pond fire, which has remained at 200 hectares as of Tuesday morning, continues to burn through trees, sending up large plumes of smoke visible from miles away. Firefighters are working tirelessly, with aerial assets and ground crews joining forces to contain the blaze. Lawlor emphasized the extreme fire behavior expected due to dry conditions, warning that “it’s going to be a troublesome day” for firefighters.
Multiple Fires Across the Province
Currently, five wildfires remain uncontrolled in Newfoundland and Labrador, including the Kingston, Martin Lake, Udjuktok Bay, and Travespine fires. The Kingston fire has expanded to Ochre Pit Cove, and crews are working to build fire guards to prevent further spread. While the Holyrood fire has been contained, the Martin Lake fire has experienced significant growth, particularly on its northeast and southwest corners.
Impact on Local Communities

In addition to the evacuation alerts in Paradise and C.B.S., thousands of residents are on high alert. David Coates, a C.B.S. resident, expressed anxiety about the situation, noting that while he’s ready to leave if necessary, he remains hopeful the fire won’t affect his community.
Weather Conditions and Safety Concerns
With hot, dry weather and low humidity expected to continue, the fire risk remains extreme. Environment Canada has issued air quality and heat warnings for the region, further exacerbating the situation. The fire hazard map shows most of Newfoundland at an extreme fire risk, with some areas of Labrador also in danger.

Sporting Events Adjustments and Facility Closures
The Canada Summer Games, taking place nearby, has already adjusted its schedule, moving certain events from Paradise and C.B.S. to St. John’s. Several towns, including Mount Pearl, have closed their indoor recreational facilities due to air quality concerns, with updates to come as the situation evolves.
As authorities continue to battle the wildfires, residents are urged to remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if necessary. Firefighters and emergency crews are working around the clock, but with no immediate relief in sight, the coming days are crucial in managing this crisis.
