Brampton Becomes Ontario’s Third Largest City, Surpassing Mississauga
Brampton has officially become Ontario’s third largest city, with a population of 791,486, surpassing Mississauga. This milestone was confirmed by Statistics Canada’s latest census data, revealing significant growth for Brampton over the past four years.

Brampton’s Population Growth
Brampton’s population grew by approximately 15% since 2020, adding over 100,000 residents. In comparison, Mississauga, which now has a population of 780,747, experienced a slower recovery from earlier declines.
Key population figures include:
- Brampton (2025): 791,486
- Mississauga (2025): 780,747
- Vancouver (2024): 756,008
Brampton also holds the title of Canada’s fastest-growing major city, based on its 10.6% growth rate from 2016 to 2021 among the 25 most populous municipalities.
Factors Driving Growth
Brampton’s rapid population increase reflects its status as a destination of choice for newcomers. Mayor Patrick Brown highlighted both opportunities and challenges tied to this growth.

“We face rising demands for health care, public safety, recreation, and transit,” Brown said. “But clearly, people see something special in Brampton.”
Peel Region Premier Doug Ford echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the province’s plans for improved transit infrastructure, including a tunnel between Mississauga and Brampton.
Calls for Better Funding and Representation
City leaders have raised concerns about Brampton’s share of funding. Currently, Brampton operates with per capita funding that reflects outdated population estimates of 650,000 people.
Coun. Rowena Santos stressed the need for changes:
“We are larger than Vaughan, Hamilton, and now Mississauga. Yet, funding and representation lag behind these realities.”

A motion has been introduced to increase Brampton’s seats on Peel Region Council. The city currently holds nine seats, while Mississauga has 12, despite Brampton’s larger population.
Comparing Brampton and Vancouver
Notably, Brampton has outgrown Vancouver in population. While Vancouver’s city population was 756,008 in 2024, its metro area, including suburbs, remains much larger at 2.6 million residents.
Looking Ahead
Brampton’s growth may slow due to Canada’s federal immigration cap, according to Mayor Brown. However, economic development in the region is expected to remain strong.
This shift in population rankings marks a pivotal moment for Brampton. As its influence grows, the city faces new opportunities and challenges in meeting the demands of its expanding community.
