Repeat Offender Charged in Vancouver Teen Sexual Assault and Crime Spree
A 62-year-old man with a long history of sexual offences has been charged in a disturbing Vancouver teen sexual assault that took place during a violent crime spree this week. According to Vancouver police, John Frederick Field—a convicted sex offender on probation—allegedly attacked a 14-year-old girl in a public washroom near Oakridge Centre. He is now facing five serious charges, raising new questions about how repeat offenders are monitored in B.C.

A Pattern of Repeat Offences
Field, who has a long criminal record dating back to his youth, was on probation for a 2023 sexual assault on a healthcare worker when the alleged attack on the teenage girl occurred.
A B.C. Supreme Court judge sentenced him to 30 months in prison last September. But because of time already served, he only had to spend three more months in jail. At the time, the judge noted a disturbing psychological assessment that described Field as “unlikely to change” due to a personality disorder and lifelong institutionalization starting at age 15.
Field had previously violated parole conditions and was the subject of a Canada-wide warrant in 2022.
Wednesday’s ‘Crime Spree’ in Vancouver

Police say the incident began around 5:15 p.m. when someone assaulted a 58-year-old woman outside her medical appointment. Just minutes later, the attacker allegedly targeted a 14-year-old girl in a public washroom. Authorities accuse Field of sexually assaulting and confining the girl at knifepoint.

According to investigators, he fled when someone tried to enter the washroom, then allegedly robbed a bank on the building’s ground floor. Police arrested him shortly after at 5:40 p.m..
Field now faces five charges, including:
- Sexual assault
- Forcible confinement
- Robbery
- Assault
- Possession of a weapon
Public and Political Reaction
B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma said the incident “shocked” her and raised concerns about how someone with Field’s history reoffended so quickly.

“It’s a horrific and really tragic incident,” Sharma said in an interview. “Every time something like this happens, it’s my job to understand what was wrong with the system that led to it.”

Sharma also said the Criminal Code may need changes to better address individuals who repeatedly breach court orders and show disregard for legal boundaries.
High-Risk Status Ignored?
Vancouver police previously designated Field as a “high-risk sex offender,” and his criminal history includes multiple sexual assaults, break-ins, and thefts.Yet despite this, prosecutors did not pursue a dangerous offender designation during his last sentencing—a decision that might have otherwise kept him behind bars indefinitely.
VPD Seeking Witnesses
The Vancouver Police Department is urging anyone with information about the alleged incidents to call 604-717-0602.
A bail hearing for Field is scheduled for June 12.
Do you think Canada’s justice system does enough to protect the public from high-risk repeat offenders?
