Flood Risk: Heavy Rain & Melting Snow May Cause Flooding
Toronto residents are preparing for potential flooding as heavy rain and melting snow increase water levels in low-lying areas. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning of 15 to 25 mm of rainfall from Wednesday through Thursday morning. Rising temperatures, peaking at 7°C, will accelerate snowmelt, adding to the flood risk.

Flood-Prone Areas on High Alert
Residents in flood-prone neighborhoods, including The Beaches and the Don Valley, are expressing concern. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) issued a Watershed Conditions Statement, cautioning that melting ice and excess runoff could trigger ice jams and flash flooding in certain areas.
“If it’s warmer than expected or if we receive more rain, we could face a dangerous situation,” said David Kellershohn from the TRCA.
City Officials Respond to Flood Threat
City officials have deployed crews to clear catch basins in low-lying areas, including along the Don Valley Parkway (DVP). In a statement, the city assured residents that teams remain on standby 24/7 to address any flooding concerns.
“We have removed snow in key areas to reduce the risk, but we remain prepared to respond quickly,” a city spokesperson stated.
Despite these efforts, some residents feel the city has not done enough. Longtime Beaches resident Stewart Cruickshank expressed frustration, noting that previous floods caused tens of thousands of dollars in damages to his home.
Public Safety Warnings Issued
Authorities urge the public to stay off lakes, rivers, and ponds, warning that warming temperatures and rain weaken natural ice surfaces. Toronto Police emphasized that all ice is unsafe at this time of year, particularly on Lake Ontario and other water bodies.
Weather Outlook: Snow Expected After Rainfall
The rainfall is expected to transition to snow overnight, with 2 to 4 cm of accumulation possible by Thursday morning. Temperatures will drop to 1°C, creating icy and slippery conditions on roads and sidewalks.
Residents should remain alert and take necessary precautions as weather conditions evolve. Authorities will provide updates as needed.
