GameStop Canada has a new owner—and a new (old) name. French-Canadian entrepreneur Stephan Tetrault has officially acquired GameStop’s Canadian business and plans to relaunch it as EB Games Canada, reviving the iconic brand that many Canadian gamers grew up with.

Back to the Brand Canadians Loved

GameStop had operated 185 stores across Canada, generating $204 million in sales in 2024—about 5% of the company’s total revenue. But with the sale finalized, all stores will revert to the EB Games Canada name, a nod to the brand that served Canadian gamers from 1993 until 2021, before it was fully rebranded by GameStop.

“This isn’t just a business decision—it’s about bringing something back that Canadians truly loved,” Tetrault said in a press release. He will serve as both owner and CEO of the relaunched EB Games Canada.

What’s Changing for Customers

Over the coming months, the stores will undergo a complete rebranding. That includes:

  • New signage and in-store experiences
  • A redesigned website
  • Stronger focus on collector culture
  • More events and community engagement
  • Expanded product lines tied to pop culture

Tetrault says the goal is to create a space that blends nostalgia with innovation—where Canadian fans can find both the games they love and the culture they celebrate.

Leadership Rooted in Toys and Fandom

Tetrault is no stranger to the world of collectibles. He founded Imports Dragon, co-owns McFarlane Toys, and recently became an investor and partner in Mastermind Toys. His deep ties to fandom and retail suggest a strategic pivot toward fan-driven experiences and local market understanding.

GameStop Canada President Jim Tyo also emphasized the community-first direction: “We want EB Games Canada to be more than a store—we want it to be the hub for gaming and fandom culture across Canada.”

GameStop’s International Exit Continues

The sale of the Canadian unit is part of GameStop Corp.’s ongoing retreat from international markets. In recent years, it exited the UK, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. CEO Ryan Cohen confirmed in February that he was also looking to sell the French division, Micromania.

What’s Next for EB Games Canada

The nationwide transition is already in motion, with branding updates expected to roll out throughout 2025. Customers can follow developments via GameStop.ca or @GameStopCanada on social media.

While the exact terms of the deal remain undisclosed, what’s clear is that EB Games is making a homegrown comeback, backed by leaders who understand both the market and the passion of Canadian fans.

What’s your favourite EB Games memory? Are you excited about its comeback under Canadian ownership?
