Heavy Snow Closes Whitemud Drive and 23 Avenue in Edmonton
Edmonton drivers faced major travel disruptions on March 27, 2025, as heavy snow and poor road conditions led to multiple collisions and forced the closure of key roads, including Whitemud Drive and 23 Avenue.

According to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), Whitemud Drive was shut down in both directions between Quesnell Bridge and Gateway Boulevard starting at 8:34 p.m. The closure was due to a series of crashes amid deteriorating conditions.
Shortly after, EPS also reported the closure of 23 Avenue between Rabbit Hill Road and 119 Street—another major route in southwest Edmonton—because of similar traffic incidents.

“The Edmonton Police Service is reminding all motorists to please slow down and exercise safe driving as the winter weather continues,” EPS said in a public statement.
The Alberta RCMP also issued an advisory, warning that road and weather conditions pose a serious hazard across much of the province.
Tow Ban Issued for Leduc Area
In addition to road closures in Edmonton, officials implemented a tow ban in the Leduc area, located just south of the city. The restriction comes as snowfall continues to impact road safety and emergency response capabilities.

Snowfall Totals and Forecasts
Although official totals from Environment and Climate Change Canada were still pending as of late Thursday, early estimates suggest that some parts of Edmonton have already received over 20 centimeters of snow. Some forecasts warn that up to 30 centimeters could fall by Friday morning under a continuing snowfall warning.
