Manitoba To Ban Social Media And AI Chatbots For Youth In Historic Canadian First
Expect Manitoba to ban social media and artificial intelligence chatbots for youth very soon. Premier Wab Kinew dropped the bombshell announcement Saturday evening during a provincial NDP fundraising gala in Winnipeg.
The sweeping new legislation makes Manitoba the absolute first province in Canada to push forward with a comprehensive digital ban for youth. Kinew directly called out tech giants for engineering platforms that deliberately hook young minds.
He criticized tech billionaires for prioritizing engagement metrics and advertising revenue over childhood development.

Emulating Australia’s Aggressive Digital Blackout
This bold legislative move heavily mirrors the landmark approach recently established overseas. Just last December, Australia enacted the world’s first nationwide social media ban for individuals under 16.
Manitoba plans to take the Australian model one step further by adding AI chatbots to the restricted list. Australia currently forces platforms to completely remove underage accounts and block new ones from forming.

Companies that fail to comply with the Australian mandate face massive financial penalties reaching up to $48.8 million CAD. The proposed legislation will actively target the most heavily trafficked digital spaces.
If the province strictly matches the international framework, the ban will instantly restrict platforms including:
- TikTok
- Instagram and Facebook
- Snapchat
- X (formerly Twitter)
- YouTube and Twitch
The Real Cost Of The Infinite Scroll
The decision arrives right as global health authorities sound the alarm on the digital crisis gripping teenagers. Frequent social media use drastically increases the risk of poor mental health outcomes, including skyrocketing rates of anxiety and depression among youth.
Kinew stressed that these platforms amplify toxic comparisons and expose children to harmful content. The addictive infinite scroll directly disrupts critical childhood development stages.

To combat this, the upcoming Manitoba legislation will target the core mechanisms of these apps. While the government has not yet specified the exact age cutoff, leaders intend the ban to fundamentally change how kids interact online.
Could Ontario Implement A Similar Digital Ban?
The push to strictly regulate big tech rapidly gains serious momentum across the entire country. Lawmakers in Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Saskatchewan currently explore similar aggressive age restrictions.
Even the federal government seriously considers sweeping national guidelines following recent internal policy resolutions. For families right here in the GTA, this raises a massive question about our own digital future.
Will Ontario leaders follow Manitoba’s lead and shut down the endless scrolling for local kids?
Now that we expect Manitoba to ban social media for youth, do you think Ontario should follow suit? Does this legislation step too far into personal parenting choices? Drop your thoughts in the comments below and let’s get the debate started!
